Epilepsy is a state of the nervous system that affects 2.5 million Americans. More than 180,000 people are diagnose with epilepsy every year.

It can be scary watching an important person have an epileptic seizure.

The person may lose consciousness or seem unaware of what's going on, make instinctive motions (movements the being has no control over, such as jerking or thrashing one or more parts of the body), or experience unusual feelings or sensations (such as unexplained fear).

http://www.himalayahomeremedies.com/healthcare/what-is-epilepsy.html

Epilepsy is a brain disarray in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormally.

In epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuronal movement becomes disturbed, causing strange sensations, emotions, and behavior or now and then convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness.

Epilepsy is a disorder with many potential causes. Anything that disturbs the normal pattern of neuron motion - from illness to brain damage to nonstandard brain advance - can lead to seizures.

Epilepsy is slightly more ordinary in men, and there are various reasons why this may be so. One reason is that men are more probable to suffer head injury and brain infection.

Another theory is that the common sense of boy and girl babies develops in a different way in the womb due to difference in male and female sex hormones.

Causes of Epilepsy

Though the causes of Natural Epilepsy are not exposed, it is believed that hereditary can be a factor.

However, epilepsy is a neurological problem, which is totally different from mental problems.

Some believe that Natural Epilepsy can occur to a being after he or she receives an injury to the brain from end to end an infection, a stroke, falls, brain tumors etc.

1. If you have a family history of epilepsy, you may be at increased risk, although genetic inheritance plays only a partial role in causing epilepsy.

2. Prolonged high fevers during childhood.

3. Head injuries and brain damage due to accidents.

4. A stroke or other disease of the blood vessels can injure your brain or deprive it of oxygen leading to seizures.

5. Brain tumors can cause epilepsy, although this is very rare.

Symptoms of Epilepsy

Seizures are the only visible indication of epilepsy. There are diverse kinds of seizures, and symptoms of each type can affect people in a different way. Seizures classically last from a few seconds to a few minutes.

You may remain alert during the seizure or lose consciousness.
You may not remember what happened throughout the seizure or may not even realize you had a seizure.

Treatment of Epilepsy

The neurology team will design a treatment plan according to medical state, state of health and human being needs.

They may also refer to added doctors or other medical professionals. Most medical treatments can involve some risks or complications.

Home Remedies for Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal unusually.

These seizures are temporary signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain.

Epilepsy is defined as periodic change in neurological function, often accompanied by alterations' in awareness due to abnormal. Electrical discharge within the brain.

In epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuronal activity becomes bothered, causing strange sensations, emotion, and behavior or from time to time convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of awareness.

Epilepsy is a nerve related physical disorder. In epilepsy the brain's normal electrical activity is disrupted and the patient experiences seizures as a result of that. In an Epilepsy attack patients may lose consciousness or his/her vision can turn blank for a few seconds. Patients lose control over their senses and start making queer movements like jerking or thrashing various parts of their body.

Epilepsy attack can be controlled but it cannot be cured. Therefore treatment of epilepsy has to be continued for the whole life. Patient has to continuously remain health conscious. That's how he/she can lead a healthy life.

The natural remedies of epilepsy are more to do with life style management. The remedies include certain advises.

Epilepsy patients should follow strict diet; they should live in a relaxed environment and they should do minimum or less intensity exercise on a regular basis. Once in a week a fruit diet is good for these patients.

Instead of heavy large meals, epilepsy patients should prefer taking small meals during the day.
Application of mud pack is said to be a good cure to decrease the occurrence of epileptic attack in a patient.
Application of hot and cold compress at the back of head for 2-3 minutes proves beneficial in controlling epileptic seizures. At the same time bathing in Epsom salt treated water proves healthy for the patients suffering from epilepsy.
The patients of epilepsy should avoid all sorts of emotional outbursts. Strict avoidance of physical and mental stress and a relaxing life style is the secret of consistent well-being of an epileptic patient.
The sharp aroma of basil helps an epileptic patient to recover from a seizure attack quickly. It is thereby recommended that epilepsy patients should keep basil flower or basil essential oil fragrance in a hanky which they can inhale the moment the seizure strikes.

Fresh grape juice consumption works almost like a miracle for an epilepsy patient. The patient of epilepsy should drink 500ml grape juice three times daily for minimum three months. This simple natural remedy will surely help him/her get better control over epileptic seizures.

Vitamin B6 is a good supportive dietary remedy for epilepsy. Natural sources of vitamin B6 are milk, rice, brewer's yeast, green leafy vegetables, peanuts, and carrots and these ingredients should be included in the daily diet of epileptic persons.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which a person has recurrent seizures. A seizure is caused by a sudden burst of excess electrical activity in the brain, causing a temporary disruption in the normal message passing between brain cells. This disruption results in the brain's messages becoming halted or mixed up.

Classification And Types Of Epilepsy
A simple classification of epilepsy is : -

* Generalised Epilepsy
o Generalised Tonic Clonic seizures
o Absences
o Myoclonic epilepsy
* Partial Epilepsy
o Simple partial seizure
o Complex partial seizure
* Partial becoming generalized.

Causes Of Epilepsy

Some seizures are idiopathic, which means the cause can not be identified. Such seizures usually begin between ages 5 and 20, but they can occur at any age. People with this condition have no other neurological problems, but often have a family history of seizures or epilepsy.

Some of the things that can make a person more likely to develop epilepsy : -

* A brain injury, such as from a car crash or bike accident
* An infection or illness that affected the developing brain of a fetus during pregnancy
* Lack of oxygen to an infant's brain during childbirth
* Meningitis, encephalitis, or any other type of infection that affects the brain
* Brain tumors or strokes
* Poisoning, such as lead or alcohol poisoning
* Alcohol withdrawal
* Birth injuries

Diagnosis Of Epilepsy

An electroencephalograph (EEG), a reading of the electrical activity in the brain, may confirm the presence of various types of seizures. It may, in some cases, indicate the location of the lesion causing the seizure. EEGs can often be normal in between seizures, so it may be necessary to do prolonged EEG monitoring.

Brain imaging methods (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] or computer tomography [CT] scanning) may also be used to find the location of a scar or damaged brain tissue. Sometimes positron emission tomography [PET] is used to examine brain blood flow.

The Treatments For Epilepsy Include : -

Temporal Lobectomy

Lesionectomy

Hemispherectomy

Corpus Callosotomy

Vagus Nerve Stimulation

Multiple Subpial Transections

Epilepsy is a condition where a person's brain, for any amount of reasons, takes off in a frenzy of electrical activity which causes the person to have a seizure. The reason for epilepsy is often unknown, although there is a good list of things that have been proven to have some connections to the disease. Head injury, birth trauma, flickering light, food sensitivity or allergies, fatigue, and loud noises have all been linked to it, but it is highly unlikely that one with epilepsy will be able to narrow it down in all cases to just one or even more of these reasons. However, finding a remedy for epilepsy is often much more important than finding the cause.

Epilepsy cannot be cured completely but can be managed to some extent. Hence the family members of epilepsy patients need to be careful so that the patient can lead a healthy life.Life style management is most important and essential aspect of epilepsy. Here are certain advices which need to be followed by the patient and family members.

• The epilepsy patient should live in a peaceful and comfortable environment and should follow a very strict diet. If possible he/she should remain in fruit diet once a week, do some exercise daily and take small meals during day instead of heavy meals.

• Mud pack application is found to b very effective in this case, it decreases the incidence of epileptic attacks.

• Fresh grape juice consumption does miracle for the epilepsy patients. 600 ml of grape juice should be consumed by them at least for 4-5 months daily. This simple cure can give wonderful results.

• The patients should take bath in Epsom salt treated water; it will give good results and will reduce the frequency as well as severity of the epileptic attacks.

• Hot and cold compress should be applied in the head part daily for 4- minutes; patient will feel relaxed and soothing.

• There should be strict prevention from all sorts of mental and physical stress if the patient wants to lead a consistent healthy life.

• The patients are highly recommended to keep basil oil fragrance in the napkin or basil flowers with them all the time, as the sharp fragrance of basil aids in recovering from the epileptic seizures in a very short span of time.

• The patients should consume the diet rich in Vitamin B6, as it is a good helpful dietary remedy for them.

* Generalised Epilepsy
o Generalised Tonic Clonic seizures
o Absences
o Myoclonic epilepsy
* Partial Epilepsy
o Simple partial seizure
o Complex partial seizure
* Partial becoming generalized.

* Brain tumors or strokes
* Poisoning, such as lead or alcohol poisoning
* Alcohol withdrawal
* Birth injuries

Dallas, TX: SandlerResearch announce it will carry Epilepsy Therapeutics – Pipeline Assessment and Market Forecasts to 2017Market Research Report in its Store.

GlobalData, the industry analysis specialist, has released its new report, 'Epilepsy – Pipeline Assessment and Market Forecasts to 2017'. The report is an essential source of information and analysis on the global Epilepsy market. The report identifies the key trends shaping and driving the global Epilepsy market. The report also provides insights on the prevalent competitive landscape and the emerging players expected to significantly alter the market positioning of the current market leaders. Most importantly, the report provides valuable insights on the pipeline products within the global Epilepsy sector.

This report is built using data and information sourced from proprietary databases, primary and secondary research and in-house analysis by GlobalData's team of industry experts.

GlobalData estimates the global epilepsy market to be worth $8.7 billion in 2009, and is forecast to register a modest growth of 0.4% annually to reach $9 billion by 2017. The major factor to stagnate the growth is generic erosion of leading second generation antiepileptic drugs following patent expiry in 2010 and 2013. The market is forecasted to register a decline owing to competition from generics which is predicted to increase over the next two years. Increasing penetration and availability of generics continue to contribute to the barrier to entry for prospective players. The major drivers in the market are expected to be those featuring more convenient dosing with the launch of extended release formulation and a purported improved safety profile of drugs such as eslicarbazepine, (Sepracor), E2007 (Eisai); Rikelta (brivaracetam, UCB), which are expected to be launched in the market in few years. Second generation epileptic drugs such as levetiracetam and Vimpat are expected to drive the value of epileptic market.

Scope

The report provides information on the key drivers and challenges of the Epilepsy market. Its scope includes:
- Annualized global Epilepsy market revenues data from 2001 to 2009, forecast for eight years to 2017.
- Pipeline analysis data providing a split across the different phases, mechanisms of action being developed and emerging trends. Pipeline candidates fall under major therapeutic classes such as Ion Channel Inhibitor, GABA Modulators, Acetylcholine Agonist, Sigma 1 receptor agonist, Caspase-1 Inhibitor, Potassium Channel Opener, AMPA receptor antagonist, and Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
- Analysis of the current and future competition in the global Epilepsy market. Key market players covered are UCB, Eisai, Supernus Pharma, Lundbeck, GSK, Johnson %26 Johnson, Upsher-Smith Labs, King Pharma, Nobelpharma, CyDex Pharma, and Sepracor Inc.
- Insightful review of the key industry drivers, restraints and challenges. Each trend is independently researched to provide a qualitative analysis of its implications.
- Key topics covered include strategic competitor assessment, market characterization, unmet needs and the implications for the Epilepsy therapeutics market.

Reasons to buy

The report will enhance your decision making capability. It will allow you to:
- Develop and design your in-licensing and out-licensing strategies through a review of pipeline products and technologies and by identifying the companies with the most robust pipeline.
- Develop business strategies by understanding the trends shaping and driving the global Epilepsy market.
- Drive revenues by understanding the key trends, innovative products and technologies, market segments and companies likely to impact the global Epilepsy market in future.
- Formulate effective sales and marketing strategies by understanding the competitive landscape and by analyzing the performance of various competitors.
- Identify emerging players with potentially strong product portfolios and create effective counter-strategies to gain a competitive advantage.
- Organize your sales and marketing efforts by identifying the market categories and segments that present maximum opportunities for consolidations, investments and strategic partnerships.
- What's the next big thing in the global Epilepsy market landscape? – Identify, understand and capitalize.

More About Epilepsy:

Epilepsy is defined by the presence of frequent seizures. It's a common and chronic neurological disorder. Some people refer to the seizure as a fit. But when the seizure is technically defined it is referred to as excessive, abnormal synchonous neuronal activity in the individual's brain.

Seizures can look different depending upon the case at hand. Sometimes they appear as out of control physical movements; uncontrollable fits. Other seizures appear as a general lack of awareness; quite brief. Sometimes a seizure can appear as a sudden presentation of psychic symptoms like deja vu. There are many types of seizure. But the frequent and uncontrolled presentation of seizures is termed epilepsy. While epileptics have frequent seizures they aren't the only ones who experience seizures.

Most of the "single episode seizures" are appropriately managed by an individual's primary care physician or emergency general practitioners. But the investigation and ongoing management of consistent seizures or epilepsy is typically handled by a specialist; a neurologist. Particularly difficult cases of epilepsy are often referred to an epileptologist which is a neurologist with a specialty in epilepsy.

About Epilepsy Surgery:

The condition is not rare. In industrialized countries approx. .4% of the population have epilepsy. Of those who have epilepsy about 60% suffer from focal epilepsy. In some instances anticonvulsive drugs can be prescribed and can effectively manage the condition. But 15 to 20% of epileptics cannot control their seizures with drugs. These individuals are candidates for epilepsy surgery.

Recovery from Epilepsy Surgery:

Pharmaceuticals are the first option for controlling epilepsy. But when this is not possible epilepsy surgery is an appropriate option. Recovery time from epilepsy surgery varies depending upon the general health of the patient and the specific aspects of the surgery.

Amongst the diseases that have frequently gripped Americans, Epilepsy is also the one. Though epilepsy allows its patients to lead a normal life yet the disease can be fatal due to the unexpected occurrence of seizures. Epilepsy can basically be defined as a disorder of the nervous system that causes a person to become unconscious suddenly, often with violent movements of the body. This attack that affects the individual’s brain is termed as ‘seizure’. Seizures happen due to the large electrical activity in the cranium (the bone structure that forms the head and borders and protects the brain). An epileptic is hit by a seizure suddenly any time and anywhere. Every individual has his own resistance to fight these seizures which is known as the seizure threshold. The minimum the seizure threshold, frequent are the seizure attacks and impacts. Seizures vary from person to person; a person during this attack behaves according to the kind of seizure.

Causes of Epilepsy-

It is very difficult to trace the exact foundations of this disease. However, there is a threefold division made in this regard-

Symptomatic Epilepsy- the case of epilepsy in which the reasons behind the disease can be well known. The causes can be various such as head injuries, meningitis, brain stroke and any other brain infection etc. The knowledge of the causes leads to an adequate and appropriate drug medication which varies from person to person.

Idiopathic Epilepsy â€" is the case when no lucid causes behind epilepsy seizures are revealed. Having a low seizure threshold is often deemed to be the only reason behind it. But, idiopathic epilepsy does respond well to its treatment by drugs.

Cryptogenic Epilepsy- it is the most challenging kind of epilepsy for the doctors for no reasons to it are known and medicines too are not much effective.

Preventing and Healing Epilepsy- Diet is often given importance in case of epilepsy. This is because many epilepsy patients are found to have less of omega-3 fatty acid DHA in their blood. So, a diet rich in this like the fatty fish, canned tuna are often recommended to make up this deficiency.

Since epilepsy is read and administered differently in case of men, women and children, the remedies too differ in each case. For instance, epileptic children are mostly advised a diet which is rich in fats, adequate proteins and low in carbohydrates.

Apart form diet prescription; epileptic patients are given anti-epileptic or anti-convulsion drugs. These drugs are mean to control and prevent the seizures. These drugs increase the patient’s seizure threshold and avert the electrical charges in the brain that can cause seizures. Anti â€" convulsion drugs are found to be quite successful in controlling seizures. For many people stress busters, biofeedback, acupuncture and meditation are cures to epilepsy.

Epilepsy Patients and You

Epileptic seizures can be quite scary for the rest of the public. Seizures can result in numbness, dizziness, and plucking clothes, smacking lips, swallowing and wandering around. Atonic seizures lead to a fall due to unexpected loss of muscle control; strong jerks to the body and at times even loss of consciousness are involved in myoclonic seizures and the most dreadful Tonic- clonic seizures result in an unconscious and stiffened body and loss of oxygen due to irregular breathing.

But if any such seizure happens in public or at home, it is the duty of the rest to help the patient. Don’t start hitting that person, stuff his mouth with something and give him some eatables or drinks. Just try to prevent him from any serious injury. Put some cushions near his head if at home or take the person to a roadside safe place if seizure hits publicly. Call an ambulance as fast as possible or rush to the nearest hospital.

The onset of epilepsy is most common during childhood and after age 65, but the condition can occur at any age. Epilepsy is a condition of the nervous system that affects 2.5 million Americans. More than 180,000 people are diagnosed with epilepsy every year. In epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuronal activity becomes disturbed, causing strange sensations, emotions, and behavior or sometimes convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness. These physical changes are called epileptic seizures Seizures occur when there's a sudden change in the normal way your brain cells communicate through electrical signals. Seizures can be triggered in anyone under certain conditions, such as life-threatening dehydration or high temperature. Other types of seizures not classified as epilepsy include those caused by an imbalance of body fluids or chemicals or by alcohol or drug withdrawal. A single seizure does not mean that the person has epilepsy. EEGs and brain scans are common diagnostic test for epilepsy.

Causes of Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder that is characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures.[1][2] These seizures are transient signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal, excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain.[3] About 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy at any one time.[4] Epilepsy is usually controlled, but not cured, with medication, although surgery may be considered in difficult cases.

Epilepsy is a group of related disorders characterized by a tendency for recurrent seizures. There are different types of epilepsy and seizures. Epilepsy drugs are prescribed to control seizures, and rarely surgery is necessary if medications are ineffective.Having a seizure does not necessarily mean that a person has epilepsy. Only when a person has had two or more seizures is he or she considered to have epilepsy. EEGs and brain scans are common diagnostic test for epilepsy.

Risk factors of Epilepsy
Head injuries are responsible for many cases of epilepsy. You can reduce your risk by always wearing a seat belt while riding in a car and by wearing a helmet while bicycling, skiing, riding a motorcycle, or engaging in other activities with a high risk of head injury.
Stroke
Seizures can occur at the time of a stroke or many years later. They may occur with strokes that result in lack of blood flow to the brain or with those that involve bleeding (hemorrhage) into or around the brain.

The most common central nervous system infections are encephalitis and meningitis. Researchers have also found an association between epileptic seizures and CNS-occuring herpes simplex virus infections. More research is needed before any causative role can be proved.

Signs and Symptoms
Alternating contraction and relaxation of muscle groups
Eye movements and turning of the head to the same side

To the observer, the person experiencing such a seizure may cry out or make some sound, stiffen for some seconds, then have rhythmic movements of the arms and legs. Often the rhythmic movements slow before stopping.

How is epilepsy treated?
Treatment methods control seizures for most people with epilepsy. Antiepileptic drugs are the most common form of treatment. With certain types of epilepsy, when medication is not effective, surgery may be. Another option is vagus nerve stimulation, a recently approved therapy in which an electrical device is implanted in the affected person's shoulder to periodically stimulate a cranial nerve.
Keep calm and reassure other people who may be nearby.
Unless the individual and his/her disorder are well-known to you, you should have someone call 911 and ask for an ambulance immediately. Especially if this is a first time seizure, the person should be taken to the nearest hospital emergency department for an evaluation.What is clear, however, is that anti-epileptic medications should at least be considered for discontinuation in patients who are seizure-free for 10 years. If a medication is going to be discontinued, it should be weaned gradually to avoid triggering a seizure.
Vagus nerve stimulation -- This procedure involves minor surgery and is a relatively new treatment that helps prevent or lessen the severity of seizures. An electrical stimulator is placed beneath the skin of the upper chest. The stimulator, which emits electrical impulses, is connected to an electrode that is attached to a nerve in the neck through a small incision.

Medications
More than a dozen medications are currently approved to treat epilepsy. Each medication has benefits and side effects, and different medications are appropriate for different types of epilepsy.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic diseases in the world, and is present in up to 4% of the world's population. Treatment of epilepsy with medications is a major effort of the World Health Organization, as many patients with epilepsy never receive the treatment that would render them seizure free. Epilepsy surgery is even less likely to be considered in developed or developing countries because of a lack of resources or a lack of recognition by the physician that a treatable syndrome exists.

Surgery is an alternative for some people whose seizures cannot be controlled by medications. It has been used for more than a century, but its use dramatically increased in the 1980s and '90s, reflecting its effectiveness as an alternative to seizure medicines. The benefits of surgery should be weighed carefully against its risks, however, because there is no guarantee that it will be successful in controlling seizures.

Epilepsy surgery can be especially beneficial to patients who have seizures associated with structural brain abnormalities, such as benign brain tumors, malformations of blood vessels, and strokes.

Epilepsy treatment has evolved to include consideration of the patient's quality of life, not just the number of seizures. Both continued seizures and high doses of medication impose costs on all areas of a person's life - intellectual, psychological, social, educational, and employment. The individualized approach that should be used when prescribing seizure medicines is carried over to the surgical treatment of epilepsy. State-of-the-art technology is applied to perform the safest and least-invasive procedure that will help the patient to achieve the highest possible quality of life.

Surgical treatment of epilepsy is a treatment option in patients whose seizures are not responsive to medications or for patients who are unable to tolerate medication side effects. Medication may not also be the preferred treatment for patients whose seizures are caused by structural abnormalities in the brain.

Surgical removal of seizure-producing areas of the brain has been an accepted form of treatment for over 50 years when medicines fail to prevent seizures. However, because of new surgical techniques and new ways of identifying areas to be removed, more of these operations are being done now than ever before, and with greater success. Surgery can be performed on both children and adults. However, it is not a suitable treatment for everyone who has epilepsy, or for everyone with poor seizure control.

First line therapy for epilepsy involves treatment with antiepileptic medications. Most patients will respond to one or two different medication trials. The goal of this treatment is the elimination of seizures, since uncontrolled seizures carry significant risks, including injury and sudden death. However, in up to one third of patients with epilepsy, medications alone will be unable to eliminate seizures. In these patients, epilepsy surgery is considered.

Epilepsy is a condition in which people have epileptic attacks (also known as seizures). It is one of the more common neurological conditions, affecting 0.5-1 per cent of the population. Epilepsy is not a single condition, but a group of conditions with differing causes, treatments and prognoses Epilepsy is not a single medical condition in itself. It is a symptom of a range of other conditions that cause somebody to have repeated fits, which are also known as seizures.

Symptoms

There are many signs and symptoms of epilepsy. In many cases, the symptoms are unnoticeable. The most common symptom is a seizure. Seizures are classified as grand mal or petit mal. Grand mal seizures may consist of rapid pulse, whole body spasms, jerking muscles, biting of the tongue, bladder and bowel incontinence, and dilated pupils. Petit mal seizures are less severe and typically include temporary lack of awareness. Sufferers may appear to have a blank expression on their face, or temporarily "space out." Once the seizure concludes, the sufferer is usually unaware of their previous condition. For this reason, petit mal seizures can often overlooked.

Causes

Causes of seizures (and sometimes epilepsy) are further divided into acute and remote causes. This subclassification depends on whether there is active brain disease (an acute cause) or whether the brain abnormality is the result of an injury caused by a previous event (in which case it would be called remote). For example, if a child with meningitis experiences seizures during the illness, they would be termed acute symptomatic seizures. If that same child developed seizures that persisted for years afterwards, she would be diagnosed as having remote symptomatic epilepsy

Epilepsy stems from dozens of causes: genetics, heredity, brain tumours, viral infections, head trauma from accidents or falls, alchoholism, Alzheimer’s disease, trauma during birth, strokes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, AIDS, poison or environmental conditions, nicotine from cigarette smoke, overmedicating from certain types of drugs, hormonal changes and even lack of sleep. Epilepsy is also associated with other disorders like autism, TB, and cerebral palsy. This is one reason why the disease is often difficult to diagnose, and why, for some, it remains such a confusing disease.

Treatment

Many people have their seizures successfully controlled with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs). This is the most common way that epilepsy is treated. AEDs do not cure epilepsy. At the moment there is no cure for epilepsy. The aim of AEDs is to prevent seizures by controlling the excitability of the brain. How they do this is not totally understood. Despite this, their effectiveness in treating epilepsy has been scientifically proven.

Vagus nerve stimulation

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can reduce seizures in some people. This is when an electrical device, implanted in the chest, regularly stimulates a nerve in your neck called the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve then sends signals to areas of the brain. This treatment is only available if other medicines haven't helped and neurosurgery (brain surgery) isn't possible.

Surgery

You may be offered neurosurgery if your epilepsy is severe and is not controlled after trying several different epilepsy medicines. This can only take place if the epilepsy is associated with a specific area of your brain. Your specialist will be able to explain your options to you.
